This tournament was unique in several ways. 1. There were just 2 divisions, Intermediate and Advanced. 2. There was no separation of the genders 3. There were 3 events; Kata (Hard and Soft), Sparring and a floating event which was determined by random draw (Shobu Line, Breaking, Heavy Bag Kick, etc.). 4. All competitors were required to compete in all 3 events. 5. No awards were given for individual events. 6. Placement in individual events provided a score, 1 for first, 2 for second, etc. 7. The competitor with the lowest point total at the end of the day was awarded First Place. 8. The sparring included all levels of contact, from strict non-contact with no protective equipment to full-contact with body armor and helmets. The ring could vary in size and shape and might include an obstacle that could be used by the competitors in any way they wanted. Stalling was allowed. The idea was to avoid specialization and encourage the development of the well-rounded martial artist.Summer of 1977 Joe Hageman, Walt Draper and Rod Lindgren were tested and promoted to Shodan. Testers included Sensei Jensen, Dennis Wohrer and Master Douglas Hodges.Naser Ramadan, a student from Libya, received his Shodan in the Spring of 1980.
