A Note from Woody

July 27, 2021

Dear Rod,

At Diane’s urging (under threat of painful death), I started to clean out some of my work and personal files. I’ve sure accumulated lots of stuff along the way. In amongst my karate files and related materials, I discovered some things that might be of interest to you. I’m hoping they bring back some good memories. It seems like the “karate days” at UW were a long time ago. I’d like to say that I’ve matured and gotten much more dignified in the interim, but for some reason no one that knows me will verify that as fact.

Here’s some of the materials that are relevant to you along with this short note. The core group of individuals that started in that first year of karate classes (Joe Hageman, Pat Dolan, Rod Lindgren*, Walt Draper and Dennis Wohrer) were really exceptional for talent, work ethic, and ability to work together. I would stack that group’s talent and accomplishmment against any from the Parsippany Dojo where I learned originally. While I’ve had some limited contact with all of this original group, the only person not seen or heard from is Walt Draper. Have you ever had any contact with Walt after UW? Have any idea as to his whereabouts? I know he was from Cheyenne and returned there after he graduated. Actually, I think he commuted Cheyenne to Laramie while at UW, but I’m not sure.

Thank you for your work in preserving the history of Okinawa-Te…

Woody

(*Rod lindgren actually started one year later, January of 1975)
